About Rick

I've spent much of my life asking a simple question: Why do so many thoughtful, capable, deeply loving people believe there's something wrong with them?

That question has shaped almost everything I've done.

For more than forty years I've had the privilege of listening to people's stories. As a teacher. A minister. A spiritual director. A coach. A retreat leader. As a faculty member in universities and seminaries. As a consultant with churches, nonprofits, and corporations. As a community organizer.

I've sat with people in seasons of joy and grief. During endings and beginnings. Losses. Callings. Questions. Moments when life no longer made sense.

And beneath every story, I heard another question quietly waiting:

"Who am I, really?"

Over time, I began noticing something.

People rarely needed more advice. They rarely needed someone to tell them what to do. Most already carried a deep wisdom within them. What they needed was a way to hear it.

That realization eventually became Story Healing.

Not a technique. Not a program. A way of seeing. A way of hearing their own wisdom within.

why

Why I Created Story Healing

For a long time, I've been asking questions about what makes us who we are — and what becomes possible when people stop living according to what they've been told they should be.

I spent decades as a teacher, minister, and spiritual director, listening to people's stories. Their struggles. Their hopes. Their frustrations. Their fears. I listened to my own, as well.

I saw the same truth emerge, again and again: People did not need to become someone else. They only needed a new way of seeing themselves.

I asked, "Why are we all following a big story that says there's something wrong with us?" The answer came back clear: because it's what everybody does. Everybody except the courageous ones who have dared to challenge the story, and listen to their Heart. And the Heart knows: there's nothing wrong with you.

So, I practiced listening to my Heart, and helping other people listen to theirs — as well as knowing when something that's not their Heart is speaking. I call this work "Story Healing." It's the process of seeing the beliefs that shaped you, testing to see if they're true for you, and choosing who you want to be.

Today my work includes writing, teaching, retreats, conversations, and guiding people as they rediscover the wisdom of their own Heart.

Whether we're meeting one-on-one, in a retreat circle, through a book, or across a screen, my hope is always the same: that you leave with a little more freedom than you had when you arrived.
